Heavy Duty Automotive Battery

1. Definition

A Heavy Duty automotive battery is a thick-plate flooded lead-acid battery designed for commercial vehicles — trucks, buses, construction equipment, and agricultural machinery. It prioritizes vibration resistance, deep-cycling capability, and sustained high-current delivery over compact size.

2. How It Works

Heavy duty batteries use thicker positive plates (2.5-4.0mm vs 1.5-2.0mm in SLI) with lead-antimony (Pb-Sb) or lead-calcium-tin alloy grids. The thicker plates provide more active material for sustained discharge and better resistance to deep discharge damage. Higher electrolyte volume above plates reduces watering frequency.

3. Construction

  • Thick positive plates (2.5-4.0mm) with Pb-Sb alloy grids for structural strength
  • Deep sump design — extra electrolyte reservoir below plates
  • Double-sealed cover with labyrinth venting to prevent acid leakage
  • Polypropylene ribbed container for impact and vibration resistance
  • Heavy-duty cast-on straps (COS) for high-current flow
  • Recessed terminals with robust post seals

4. Materials

  • Positive plates: Thick PbO2 paste on Pb-Sb grid
  • Negative plates: Sponge lead on Pb-Sb or Pb-Ca grid
  • Separator: Microporous PE with glass mat backing
  • Electrolyte: 37% H2SO4 with higher specific gravity (1.280-1.300)
  • Case: High-impact PP copolymer with ribbed exterior
  • Intercell connectors: Lead through-the-wall or external strap

5. Technical Parameters

  • Voltage: 12V (some 24V via dual configuration)
  • CCA: 800-1,200+ A (SAE)
  • Capacity: 120-225 Ah (C20)
  • Cycle life: 300-500 cycles
  • Vibration resistance: Exceeds SAE J537 severe duty
  • Reserve Capacity: 200-400+ minutes

6. Advantages

  • Extreme vibration resistance for off-road and heavy equipment
  • High CCA for large diesel engine starting
  • Deep cycle tolerance (better than SLI)
  • Long service life in demanding applications
  • Large electrolyte reserve reduces maintenance
  • Robust terminals for high-current draw

7. Limitations

  • Very heavy (30-55 kg per battery)
  • Large physical footprint
  • Higher cost than standard SLI
  • Periodic water maintenance (Pb-Sb grids)
  • Higher self-discharge (Pb-Sb grids)
  • Not suitable for passenger vehicles

8. Applications

  • Medium and heavy-duty trucks (Isuzu, Hino, Fuso)
  • Large buses and coaches
  • Construction equipment (excavators, loaders, dozers)
  • Agricultural machinery (tractors, harvesters)
  • Marine starting (commercial vessels)
  • Diesel generators (starting)
  • Mining equipment

10. Testing

Heavy duty batteries subjected to: SAE J537 severe vibration test (5g, 8 hours), high-rate discharge at -18degC, reserve capacity at 25A, deep cycling to 80% DoD, and thermal shock testing (-40degC to +60degC).

11. Manufacturing Considerations

Heavy duty battery production requires thick-grid casting equipment, extended curing cycles for thick plates, over-pasting control for uniform active material density, and specialized welding for heavy-duty intercell connections.

12. OEM Considerations

Chengguang manufactures two JIS heavy duty models: 145G51 (N150) and 190H52 (N200). Custom specifications available for OEM orders.

15. Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why are heavy duty batteries so much heavier than car batteries?

The thicker lead plates contain 2-3x more lead, providing more active material for sustained discharge and mechanical strength for vibration resistance.

Q: Can I use a heavy duty battery in my car?

Physically unlikely — the larger case dimensions and different terminal layout typically won't fit a passenger car battery tray.
