SLI (Starting, Lighting, Ignition) Battery
1. Definition
An SLI (Starting, Lighting, Ignition) battery is a flooded lead-acid battery purpose-built for one primary function: delivering a short, high-current burst (300-900 amps) to crank an internal combustion engine, followed by immediate recharge from the vehicle's alternator. It is the most widely manufactured automotive battery technology — representing approximately 60-65% of global automotive battery production.
At Chengguang Power Tech, SLI batteries are the highest-volume product line, manufactured on 18 automated assembly lines producing 40,000 units daily across JIS and DIN standards for export to 70+ countries.
2. How It Works
SLI batteries use lead dioxide (PbO2) positive plates, sponge lead (Pb) negative plates, and sulfuric acid (H2SO4) electrolyte. During discharge, both plates convert to lead sulfate (PbSO4) while the electrolyte becomes more dilute. The alternator reverses this reaction during charging.
3. Construction
SLI batteries contain multiple thin plates per cell to maximize surface area for high-current delivery. Plates are separated by microporous polyethylene separators. A typical 12V battery has 6 cells in series. Grids are cast from calcium-calcium (Ca-Ca) alloy for low water loss and maintenance-free operation.
4. Materials
- Positive plates: Lead dioxide (PbO2) paste on Pb-Ca grid
- Negative plates: Sponge lead (Pb) on Pb-Ca grid
- Separator: Microporous polyethylene (PE)
- Electrolyte: 37% sulfuric acid (H2SO4) solution
- Case: Polypropylene (PP) copolymer
5. Technical Parameters
- Voltage: 12V (6 cells x 2.1V)
- CCA: 300–900 A (varies by model)
- Capacity: 35–110 Ah (C20)
- Operating temperature: -30degC to +60degC
- Cycle life: 200–500 cycles (to 50% DoD)
- Self-discharge: 3–5% per month at 25degC
6. Advantages
- Lowest cost per Ah of any automotive battery technology
- Proven, mature technology with 100+ years of development
- High recyclability (>98% of materials recovered)
- Wide temperature tolerance
- Simple manufacturing process
7. Limitations
- Not suitable for deep cycling (damages plates)
- Can spill if case is cracked (flooded electrolyte)
- Requires ventilation (hydrogen gas during charging)
- Heavier than AGM/EFB equivalents
- Poor performance in start-stop applications
- Sulfation if left discharged
8. Applications
- Conventional passenger cars
- Light commercial vehicles
- Motorcycles and ATVs
- Marine starting (not deep-cycle)
- Lawn and garden equipment
- Markets where cost is the primary driver

15. Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the difference between SLI and deep-cycle batteries?
SLI batteries are designed for short, high-current bursts (engine starting) and immediate recharge. Deep-cycle batteries are designed for sustained discharge (hours) to 50-80% depth of discharge. Using an SLI battery for deep cycling will damage the thin plates.
Q: How long does an SLI battery last?
Typical service life is 3-5 years in moderate climates. Extreme heat, frequent short trips, and heavy electrical loads reduce lifespan.
Q: Are SLI batteries maintenance-free?
Modern SLI batteries with Ca-Ca grids are maintenance-free — no water topping required. Older Pb-Sb grid batteries required periodic water addition.
